Swimming Pool FAQs
Planning and Construction
1. Do I need planning permission to build a swimming pool in my garden?
Planning permission for a private swimming pool in the back garden of a domestic property in the UK is not usually required by most authorities. However, you will need permission if you plan on erecting an enclosure over the pool. It is recommended to contact your local authority before starting any work to check the requirements of local legislation.
2. Can I build the pool myself?
Yes, an All Swim liner pool kit is designed for installation by the average DIY enthusiast. However, many customers choose to hire a local bricklayer for the construction and rendering of the pool walls. All Swim provides support and advice throughout the construction process to ensure a successful installation.
3. What size pool should I buy?
The ideal pool size depends on your garden space and budget. The most popular size is 30′ x 14′ (9.0m x 4.3m). Consider factors like access for heavy machinery, underground utilities, overhead wires, water table, and ground structure when determining the size and depth of your pool. Remember that the water level is typically kept halfway up the skimmer, about 4″ below the top of the pool wall.
4. What materials are supplied in the All Swim DIY pool kit?
The All Swim DIY swimming pool kit includes a rapid sand filter, a swimming pool pump, liner, linerlock, skimmer(s), main drain, return inlet(s), low suction, pipework, valves, plumbing fittings, a multi-water test kit, a pool maintenance kit, and initial chemicals. Basic building materials such as cement, sand, chippings, concrete blocks, and reinforcing bar are not included but can be sourced from local builders’ merchants.
Pool Operation and Maintenance
5. How do I maintain the pool water?
Maintaining your pool involves keeping it physically clean and bacteriologically pure. Vacuuming the pool, cleaning the skimmer, and backwashing the filter ensures physical cleanliness. Chlorine is added to the water to eliminate bacteria and algae. The included multi-test kit allows you to monitor chlorine levels, pH, and total alkalinity, ensuring optimal water quality.
6. How do I operate the pool filter?
The multiport valve on the filter controls water flow for different functions. Always switch off the pump before changing the lever position. Key functions include:
- Filter: Normal filtration mode.
- Backwash: Reverses water flow to clean the filter sand.
- Rinse: Rinses the filter after backwashing.
- Recirculate: Circulates water without filtration.
- Closed: Stops water flow.
7. How often should I backwash the filter?
Backwash the filter at least twice a week or when the pressure gauge reads 5 lbs above the clean running pressure. This ensures efficient filtration and prevents the build-up of dirt in the filter media.
8. Do I need to drain the pool for winter?
Liner pools MUST NOT be emptied. When properly winterized, a full pool will not be damaged by ice. Emptying the pool can cause the liner to shrink and become brittle, leading to irreparable damage.
