Fun little gadget It was easy for my parents to learn how to use. We keep it in the kitchen and its great for recipes, music and quick searches when our hands are dirty. You can add several devices to the family however it seems like one device needs to be the main one if your are going to store things like calendar events on it. Which may not be ideal if you would like to keep some things private.

Pros The primary reason to use this Google Hub over a simple speaker is the screen. Scrolling pictures from my photo collection or random art from a curated Google stream are great. YouTube and YouTube Music both really good. Also lots of radio. All with voice prompt. Cons Can only watch TV by casting from the app on a phone. Had hoped the Google Hub would already have TV apps and play direct from device with voice prompt.Clock faces are OK but not much variety. Need more types and colours.

The screen is very good sufficiently high resolution, sensible size, and the brightness control is always just right. Sound is loud and very clear but dont expect a hifi speaker because it has little bass. Although based on the same software and AI, the Nest Hub really capitalises on its screen, giving it many advantages over Googles Smart Speakers. I use the timers a lot, and often several at once when cooking. Being able to see their progress all at once is great, and they have fun themed sounds and animations if you name the timers. Its also great to see at a glance that what you said was understood, because your voice recognition results appear at the top of the screen as you speak. When its not busy it can show photos from albums and I completely underestimated how nice this is. The whole family enjoys seeing forgotten photos popup unexpectedly, which would normally otherwise only see the light of day when searching for something else. Search results appear with more context, and theyre surprisingly intelligently displayed gently scrolling over the part of the web page with the relevant answer. Theres no camera so you cant send video calls but the speakerphone audio quality is excellent. If your kitchen counter has too much stuff standing close around the Hub I noticed the precision of the voice control is reduced, but its excellent otherwise, and works amazingly well with a lot of background noise. It has real volume buttons on the back that you can use by feel, but you can also use gestures on the screen to show a touch volume slider. The only downside I can think of is its not going to fill a large living space with dance music, but for an average room its more than enough. It seems very well built, but if it went wrong I would have to get a replacement right away as I would really miss it.

From purely a tech viewpoint I really like this a lot more than the Amazon Alexa Dots I have. I also have had a Google Mini and wasnt making much use of it. I think the Google recognizes my intent when I ask it to turn the lights on or change the temperature better than Alexa does, its just smarter. I took off one star because of the way that it chooses YouTube videos to watch. It doesnt always translate the request into anything thats readily available on YouTube but is on Google Play instead which I dont and wont use. Ive had iTunes and now Apple Music for 20 years or so, not like Im going to jump ship now. Overall its a fun addition and I like it a lot. Its most useful if you have any sort of connected home or watch literally a ton of videos.

This is a great value and at a great price. If you are familiar with smart home hubs you may know that the hockey puck type hubs are 50. I like the screen version personally and with this package I have two screen versions of nest for just a little more than the puck version. I have a 10 screen on my main level, and one of the 7 in the lower level and one upstairs. Full house coverage for commands, news, sports scores, info….
